Our second Red Epic camera, the Epic-X, has arrived. This is simply the production version of the Epic-M and has all of the same features and abilities such as 5K RAW recording up to 120 fps, 2K RAW up to 300 fps, 13.5 stops of dynamic range and up to 18 stops using HDRx and 16 bit RAW processing in a body 1/3 of the size of the RED One.

In a package one third the size of a RED ONE, resides a 5K Mysterium-X™ sensor and a 27 layer ASIC, the most advanced processor of its type in the world, enabling EPIC to capture up to 120 frames per second, each frame at full 14MP resolution. EPIC is engineered to be a DSMC™ (Digital Still & Motion Camera), a camera that excels in both worlds … by design. RED redefines what a true hybrid camera means. Start, by shooting 5K digital cinema, which provides a mind-bending image 6 times the resolution of high definition video. Every frame of motion is a 14 MP still, from 1 to 120 frames per second. RAW, unprocessed perfection. EPIC offers a two menu setup, prioritized for still or motion, or you can extract still from motion at any time, by placing a metadata tag with the push of a button. Shoot a 2 second burst and pick the image you want from the 240 captured, or let the camera’s software do the work. Choose a RED Electronic Lens Mount or a Canon EF or Nikon AF-S Mount and enjoy the flexibility of automatic or manual focus and exposure control. RED One Mysterium-X Camera

All of our Red One cameras come with upgraded Mysterium X sensors, delivering an impressive 13.5 stops of dynamic range with native Exposure Index (ASA) of 800. This sensor if very flexible and excels both under Tungsten and Daylight sources, and is highly capable of rendering clean, beautiful images in low light and high contrast situations.

At up to 30 fps, the Red One shoots 4k resolution, which is over 4 times the resolution of 1080p HD. This gives you room to crop and reframe in post, as well as the cleanest possible HD or SD finish. The camera can be over-cranked to 120fps in 2k recording.

Our packages come fully kitted with many useful extras that you will find excluded from many Red rental kits, such as the Origo remote stop-start triggers with 30 meter cables, Element Technica rain covers, hot-swap battery modules and isolation drive mounts. They also come standard with Arri-style baseplates making them fully compatible with existing grips gear and all the cables that you need to run camera accessories.

Gates ‘DEEP RED’ underwater housing

We are very happy to announce that our Gates ‘DEEP RED’ underwater housing for the RED One Mysterium-X camera is in South Africa and ready for underwater work.

The DEEP RED housing incorporates features reflecting decades of award-winning expertise: adaptable lens support, smooth zoom, comprehensive control access, compact aluminum shell, adjustable buoyancy/trim and Gates Precision Ports™ for no compromises in image quality.

The housing has several key features:
Lens flexibility. DEEP RED can accommodate a variety of different cinema and SLR lenses with no change to control locations. Focus, Iris, Zoom and Rec/Stdby remain in the same location regardless of optics used.
Full control access. All controls are accessible on DEEP RED, including the rear menu joystick control.
Cinema-grade design. Lens choice and control access are just two of the many features designed into DEEP RED. A/R coated glass optics, tally light and HD-SDI surface feed are also intergrated.

The all aluminium housing is rated to 145 meters and the standard package includes an external housed RED LCD monitor, anti reflex coated glass dome port, acrylic flat port, 50m HD-SDI surface feed and extensions to accommodate the following lens options:

Please note that the underwater housing can only be rented out with Russell Campbell as the underwater operator. Russell has well over 3500 filming dives in many different locations around the world. He has been awarded the acclaimed Golden Panda award for his filming of mating Green Turtles for the “Armoured Giants” episode in David Attenborough’s “Life in Cold Blood”. He also was the Director of Photography for the Frolic Pet Food commercial which received a Bronze Lion award at the 2010 Cannes Festival. Russell has also filmed for various other projects such as Dorling Kindersley’s “Go Surf” and “Reef”, the Mozambique Tourism Board, Four Seasons Resorts and has his footage used on Survivor “Maldives”.

Spiderman 4 now shooting on Epic

And this is what cinematographer Johnathan Schwartzman, ASC has to say:
“I am lighting by eye except that I’ve had to re-train myself to work at lower light levels because the camera is so sensitive. The images we made today were stunning, rich beautiful color and the resolution of a vistavision camera all in a package the size of a Hasselblad 501. We are shooting 2.40 at 5K, there wasn’t a hiccup from the cameras all day, the data was flawless, and there was a lot of it.”

Hobbit: 3D on Epic

The rumors have proven true: Jim Jannard confirmed that Peter Jackson will be filming the Hobbit on the Epic camera in 3D. He will need 30 of them.

Peter Jackson says: ”I have always liked the look of Red footage.” he says, “I’m not a scientist or mathematician, but the image Red produces has a much more filmic feel than most of the other digital formats. I find the picture quality appealing and attractive, and with the Epic, Jim and his team have gone even further. It is a fantastic tool, the Epic not only has cutting edge technology, incredible resolution and visual quality, but it is also a very practical tool for film makers. Many competing digital systems require the cameras to be tethered to large cumbersome VTR machines. The Epic gives us back the ability to be totally cable free, even when working in stereo.”
